Husam Francis Banno is from Karaqos/Iraq. He is a computer scientist/software engineer. He studied MSc in computer science engineering specialized in machine learning at our Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics. His goal is to study another master's program in a different area of expertise and to establish his startup company.
Why did you choose to come to Hungary and to Pázmány?
The topics that PPCU FITB has for my major were interesting for me and it is hard to get a scholarship funded by my country. I chose Hungary because it has a history to learn from and a culture that is different from the surrounding countries.
What were your expectations?
From the study point of view, I thought it would be easy, but I was wrong I learned how to study hard and that helped me to develop many skills. As for the country I expected to see a lot in nature and historical building and places.
How did you like Pázmány Péter Catholic University? Have your expectations been fulfilled?
The professors were the best that I have met in my student life in term of knowledge and dealing with foreigner students, that was beyond my expectation.
Did you enjoy studying here? What was the best thing about PPCU?
I did enjoy studying at Pazmany there are always sad moments and happy moments, the best thing was and still is having a Chaplain and a chapel in the building and having mass every Wednesday. Also, the helpful staff that is ready to help under any circumstances and in anything.
Can you mention a challenge you have faced at PPCU?
The only challenge that I face was in one subject the way of the examination was different than what I used to.
What are the biggest differences you see between the university experience here and in your home country?
In general, the two countries have two different education systems so everything was a new experience for me I suffered a little bit, but I was able to cope with the difficulties.
What has your experience here helped you to gain and learn?
I was able to improve my language skills; I developed new strategies to detect and solve problems.
What have you learnt about yourself during the time you spent at PPCU?
I had skills that I was unaware and I discovered them during the time that I spent at PPCU.
What would be your advice to your first year self?
Learn the language from the beginning and spend the weekdays studying and enjoying on weekends.
What has the Scholarship For Young Christian People helped you to achieve?
First, it was my dream but it was not possible to achieve in my country (studying master), another thing is when I got the possibility to participate in many different conferences about the persecuted Christians in Iraq that helped me to deliver our suffering to the Hungarian community and other communities also.
How did you enjoy Hungary? What did you like the most? What was the most suprising thing?
I had traveled to other European countries, but I liked Hungary the most, first the old buildings and structures that I consider the best. The country has preserved its nation (In Hungary I see Hungarians, unlike other EU countries that are a mixture of others). The food is different and has a unique taste.
What were your first impressions here?
When I arrived at the airport, I took the metro M3 that was the first time that I use underground trains and at that time the blue old train was still operating. I hope that I will be able to see the blue metro train once again.
Did you miss anything from your home country, from your hometown?
I do miss my family, and the ability to communicate with anyone on the street without any language barrier.
What is a goal of yours?
My short-term goal is to study another master's in a different area of expertise. My long-term goal is establishing my startup company.
What would be your message to students in your home country thinking about studying abroad?
My message will be you can do it, it is not only about studying it is also about learning how other nations live.

Husam Francis Banno az iraki Karakosból érkezett. Informatikai/szoftvermérnökként végzett korábban, az Információs Technológiai és Bionikai Karunkon mérnökinformatikus képzésen tanult, gépi tanulásra specializálódva. Célja egy másik szakterületű mesterképzés elvégzése és a saját startup cég megalapítása.
Miért döntött úgy, hogy Magyarországra jön, miért a Pázmányt választotta?
A Pázmány ITK-n érdekes témák voltak a szakomat érintően és nehéz a hazám által alapított ösztöndíjat elnyerni. Ezért választottam Magyarországot, mert van történelme, amelyből tanulni lehet és kultúrája eltérő a környező országokétól.
Mik voltak az elvárásai?
Tanulmányi szempontból azt gondoltam, hogy könnyű lesz, de tévedtem. Megtanultam keményen tanulni és ez sok készség fejlesztésében segített. Ami az országot illeti, arra számítottam, hogy sokat fogok látni a természetből, sok történelmi épületet és helyet fogok látni.
Hogy tetszett a Pázmány Péter Katolikus Egyetem? Teljesültek az elvárásai?
Az oktatók – a tudás és a nemzetközi hallgatókkal való viszonyuk tekintetében - a legjobbak, akikkel valaha találkoztam hallgatói életem során, ez pedig meghaladta az elvárásaimat.
Szeretett itt tanulni? Mi volt a legjobb dolog a Pázmányon?
Élveztem a Pázmányon tanulni, voltak szomorú és boldog pillanatok is, a legjobb dolog az volt és még mindig az, hogy van egy lelkész és egy kápolna az épületben, ahol minden szerdán mise van. Továbbá a segítőkész egyetemi munkatársak, akik bármiben és minden körülmények között készen állnak segíteni.
Tudna mondani egy kihívást, amellyel a Pázmányon szembesült?
Az egyetlen kihívás, amellyel szembesültem, az a vizsga módja, más volt, mint amihez hozzászoktam.
Melyek a legnagyobb különbségek az itteni és az otthoni egyetemi élet között?
Általánosságban elmondható, hogy a két ország két különböző oktatási rendszerrel rendelkezik, így minden új tapasztalat volt számomra. Szenvedtem egy kicsit, de meg tudtam birkózni a nehézségekkel.
Az itteni tapasztalata mit tanított Önnek?
Javíthattam a nyelvtudásomon, új stratégiákat dolgoztam ki a problémák felderítésére és megoldására.
Mit tanult önmagáról a Pázmányon töltött idő alatt?
Voltak olyan készségeim, amelyekről nem tudtam és a Pázmányon töltött idő alatt fedeztem fel.
Mi lenne a tanácsa az elsőéves önmagának?
A kezdetektől tanulj nyelveket és a hétköznapokat tanulással töltsd, a hétvégét pedig szórakozással.
Mit segített elérni a Keresztény Fiataloknak szóló ösztöndíjprogram?
Először is ez volt az álmom, de a hazámban lehetetlenség volt elérni (mesterképzésen tanulni). A másik dolog pedig az, hogy lehetőséget kaptam számos különféle, iraki üldözött keresztényekről szóló konferenciákon részt venni, ami segítette abban, hogy beszámolhassak szenvedéseinkről a magyaroknak és más közösségeknek is.
Hogy tetszett Magyarország? Mit szeretett a legjobban? Mi volt a legmeglepőbb?
Jártam más európai országokban, de Magyarország tetszett a legjobban, a régi épületek és szerkezetek. Az ország megőrizte nemzetét (Magyarországon magyarokat látok, nem úgy, mint más EU-s országokban, ahol nemzetek keverékei vannak). Más az étel és egyedülálló az ízvilág.
Mi volt az első benyomása itt?
Amikor megérkeztem a repülőtérre, az M3-as metróval mentem és az volt az első alkalom, hogy metrót használtam, akkor még a régi, kék szerelvények közlekedtek. Remélem, hogy egyszer majd még láthatom a kék metrót.
Hiányzott valami a hazájából, a szülővárosából?
Nagyon hiányzott a családom, és hogy az utcán bárkivel kommunikáljak nyelvi akadály nélkül.
Milyen céljai vannak?
A rövid távú célom egy másik szakterületű mesterképzés elvégzése. A hosszú távú célom pedig a saját startup cégem megalapítása.
Mit üzenne a hazájában élő diákoknak a külföldi tanulmányokról?
Az üzenetem az, hogy meg tudják csinálni, nemcsak a tanulásról szól, hanem arról is, hogy megtanulhassuk más nemzetek hogyan élnek.
