Description of the subject: the brief, still informative description of the knowledge to be attained
Successive enlargements of the EU have constituted major events in the history of European integration. They affect the Union’s institutions, policies and policy-making processes and, because of the impact of these changes, enlargements have often been controversial. It is often argued that there is now enlargement fatigue, and progress towards the next step seems slow. However, a number of countries, especially in the Western Balkans, are eager to join. There are several countries in the Eastern and Southern neighbourhood of the EU, that may or may not become a candidate in the future, but still, all of them have special political and economic relationship with the EU.
On the course, we are going to deal with the experiences of previous enlargements and with the future of enlargement process, and also with the EU’s relations with its neighbours.
