Negotiations in Egypt

2019.03.18.

On 5 March 2019, PPCU elevated its cooperation of teaching and research with the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center (COCC) and the Franciscan Culture Center of Giza (FCC) onto a new level. Prof. Szabolcs Szuromi, Rector of PPCU and His Grace Bishop Ermia (Anba Ermia), President of COCC successfully negotiated the launch of two preparatory programs for studying mathematical and engineering sciences in higher education in the academic year of 2019/2020, provided by PPCU, or with active involvement of PPCU within the institution of COCC.

Prof. Ferenc Friedler, a member of the delegation, described in detail the mathematical talent management program developed for high school students, which significantly contributes not only to the high level understanding of certain areas of mathematics, and thus to talent-based access to institutions with outstanding international reputation, but to successful participation in international competitions as well.
The talent management method that has already achieved significant results in Transylvania has been adapted to the circumstances and conditions of Egypt, which will enable the first two Coptic Christian mathematics teachers to be trained in Hungary in July 2019. PPCU and COCC have agreed on the framework, steps and deadlines of the secondary school mathematics talent management, involving organizational, content, training matters, all aiming to motivate participation in university level education.
At the same time PPCU officially supports COCC in joining organizations responsible for international mathematical competitions of the highest level.

In addition to the talent management program, PPCU undertook to hold intensive English language preparation courses of a few weeks duration, within COCC's institutional framework, for students wishing to apply for a Hungarian state scholarship and study a Hungarian engineering program. Students with outstanding performance in the course will pass the entrance examination of PPCU's bachelor courses related to engineering studies.
PPCU has started to establish contact with international industrial companies operating in Egypt, which can provide locally based placement opportunities for young Egyptians returning to their home country with technical qualifications.

In the Franciscan Cultural Center, supplementing the bilateral agreement of 27 September 2018 and considering the positive experiences of the past school year, Prof. Szabolcs Szuromi and Melad Shehata from the Secular Franciscan Order signed an additional agreement on March 8, 2019 on the topic of launching master programs in Arabic, Archeology and History within FCC. To meet this goal PPCU set up a committee which will regularly monitor compliance with the accreditation conditions during visitations. As part of the agreement, the two institutions founded a joint international scientific journal in Cairo titled Studia Historica et Orientalia.
