Paolo G. Carozza, Professor of Law and Concurrent Professor of Political Science Director at University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA was awarded the title Doctor Honoris Causa of PPCU on the 27th of March. 

The honors were not only awarded for his high level  of professionalism and educational work on the fields of  human rights, international law and comparative constitutional law, but also as an appreciation for his dedication of social and community building work in the Catholic Church.

Professor Carozza has practiced his profession in several countries including Chile, Micronesia and Italy. Additionally he also supported the mission of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights from 2006 to 2010, first as Commissioner, and later as Vice-President and President.

As lecturer he has taught in numerous institutes, such as universities of Trento, Venice, Milan and Florance. Currently a professor of the University of Notre Dame’s Faculty of Law, he is also the Director of the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies.

Professor Carozza is an expert on the fields of Human rights, International and Comparative law, and has been recently involved in Law and Development, namely the research area of the integral relationship between law and a human being. His latest co-authored publication is titled ‘Italian Constitutional Justice in Global Context’ and was published by the Oxford University Press in 2017.

As a recognition for his comprehensive scientific efforts Pope Benedict XVI has nominated him to be a member of Pontificia Accademia delle Scienze Sociali in 2015.

On the morning of 27th March 2017 during the solemn meeting of the University Senate of Pázmány Péter Catholic University Dr. Tihamér Tóth, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law of PPCU did the honors of laudation, after which the President of PPCU, Dr. Szabolcs Szuromi has recited the content of honorary doctorate degree and thus awarded Professor Carozza for his scientific achievements and his efforts based on the common moral basis and close collaboration between the two institutes.

In his inauguration speech the new honorary doctor has discussed the place and contemporary mission of Catholic universities. He also stressed that the mission of Pázmány Péter Catholic University is unchanged since its foundation by Primate Péter Pázmány as a symbol of unity of science in a religiously and historically disrupted country. The service of this unity shall be done with inexhaustible tools and techniques, which unalterably lays on the foundation of society – the moral bond of individual and community.
